A Reporter's Life

Saddam's daughter

Saddam Hussein's daughter went on television to say that the family is supporting the captured former leader of Iraq, and that they think he was drugged after U.S. soldiers captured him in a hole Saturday.

"Every an honest person who knows Saddam knows that he is firm and powerful. Saddam was tranquilized when captured," she said in an interview with the Dubai-based Al-Arabiya television station. "He would be a lion even when caged," she said.

OK, so she wants her daddy to live. That's understandable. What I don't understand is her reasoning for thinking her father was drugged. If he would be a "lion," why didn't he fight U.S. soldiers when they found him? Why didn't he fire the revolver he had with him? Why didn't he try to be a martyr, like so many other people who were once under him?

His daughter says he would be a lion. I'm thinking she's been watching The Wizard of Oz and was thinking of the Cowardly Lion.

Actually, I was wondering why he'd be so cooperative, considering that the US is his sworn enemy. If I had a sworn enemy, I wouldn't let him put his fingers in my mouth.
I've been meaning to say, also, that he looked rather pathetic on TV. I don't feel sorry for him exactly, considering what he's responsible for, but he's definitely fallen from power. I can see why his daughter would be upset.

Ok, so let's assume he was tranquilized. It wouldn't be so far fetched that they would subdue him in some way if he did fight like a lion. Is the daughter trying to say that the videos are only propaganda? If so, she's partly right. One of our goals was met and showing video of it helps those who support his capture.

However, maybe he wasn't tranquilized. He's no spring chicken and he's been on the run for 9 months, living in moth eaten clothes and rundown holes. I doubt he's been to the gym much, what with all the attention he'd get. Most likely, he was just worn down and probably relieved to accept what seemed inevitable. A man like Saddam does not want to die, no matter how far he's fallen. He's no zealot willing to blow himself up for a cause or he'd never have gotten to the place of power he was in. He had no chance, he knew it, so he didn't fight back. Or couldn't. Maybe he was too weak to even lift the gun.

It's just a shame that after promising him a fair and speedy trial* just as soon as the Iraqi justice system is up to the job, they have to go and break the Geneva Convention (again), by broadcasting footage of him recieving a medical.

*Why is it that the countries who were previously opposed to war in Iraq because we shouldn't interfere in domestic issues are now insisting that he gets tried at the Hauge instead of in Baghdad? Is it just so that the French and Belgians can try and use their influence to get him off?

Also, I think it's interesting, that Britain has said that, if an Iraqi court wants him to have the death penalty, they're not going to interfere. Which is very close to breaking the European Convention on Human Rights.

Cheap valium is available on the internet and prices drastically lower than your local pharmacy. This is because major pharmaceutical companies have a legal stranglehold on the US which basically allows them a monopolistic pricing structure.
