The spokesman is blatantly trying to spin his way out of it by blaming the find on some unknown party who is out to disparage the church by manipulating their priests into compromising situations; it's easier to do that than admit that men of the cloth are capable of child abuse, and much easier than to consider that perhaps the spartan life offered by priesthood, with denial of self and suppression of desire acting as it's core tenets, awakens dark things in the hearts of men. Easier to blame it all on someone else than to consider that, in his hours of silent contemplation, a man of the cloth, one of God's messengers upon the Earth, can reason with himself that it's OK to want these things, and that to act upon them is not sinful, or wrong.
When I was 16, the vicar who used to talk at our school assemblies every week was charged with possessing child pornography, and despite all contrary opinion from parents and school board, the headmaster allowed him to continue preaching to us right up until he was due in court. The headmaster's reasoning? "A man of God would never be capable of such a thing." The Reverend Robb was convicted, and ended up in Barlinnie prison.
Oh yeah - our headmaster skipped the country shortly afterwards.
