Christopher Reeve

Christopher Reeve, aka Superman, died today. This news came as a shock to me, as I'd only just finished catching up on various news Web sites and moved on to non-news things. But then a TV news broadcast suddenly had the news, so I was once again back to the news online.

It's hard for me to imagine that Christopher Reeve is actually gone, because he was just so determined to conquer everything in his path. He was paralyzed, but that didn't stop him from doing everything he possibly could. Though he was confined to a wheelchair, he kept going. He worked even harder for the causes he felt were important. And he continued to live life.

He'd vowed to walk again by the age of 50 and, though that didn't happen, he was still pushing for more research. Reeve is, somehow, gone now, but he left marks that won't fade away.

Why didn't Superman stop the planes flying into the World Trade Centre?

Because he's in a wheelchair.

Addendum: What I think is the saddest part, he will never (at least on this earth) see the outcome of the stem cell research debate on next month's ballot. A bit of irony, if you ask me.

I think it's shocking when any celebrity we know passes away. This, too, caught me by suprise -- I mean, how often do we think to ourselves, "So when is so-and-so going to pass?" I don't know if we take their presence for granted, or if we're just not thinking about them when it happens. But either way, we certainly miss them when they're gone.

And you're right, jpb, irony abounds. If memory recalls, I think I may have even seen him in a commercial recently promoting SCR.

If there's a bright side, perhaps this is what it will take to get more people to take notice and see the possibilities of SCR. While we were too late to save Reeve, there are millions of others out there still waiting for a cure for such ailments.

That was a good point about the stem cell research vote, and I wonder how Reeve's death will affect the outcome. There's no way of knowing, but I have a feeling it did much more than any number of commercials could have done.
