Change?

Change may, or may not, be in the works.

My weblog was used against me last week, and it affected me enough that, even after sleeping on it, I seriously thought about deleting the whole thing. After all, my weblog shouldn't put me in any serious jeopardy. But it's still here, and I'm making another post.

I'm still thinking of doing some sort of change, though I don't know what. I'm not Dave Barry, whose blog is updated constantly and read by thousands. My blog is read by a handful of people who actually remember or bookmark the URL, and by about 20 people who subscribed to the syndication.

So, what next? I have no idea. I might just forget about this entry and continue on my way. I might delete the whole thing. I might change its focus and limitations. I really don't know.

SWAT

I finally did it. I joined the SWAT team for half a day and lived to tell the tale. The story is here.

Odd day

Hint that it's going to be an odd day: You get up at 5:25 a.m. so that you can go running (and do things like scoop the litter box) before an early meeting.

Further proof: You get to the office and not more than two minutes pass before a lady comes to see you because she wants you to care about how she lost a jury trial, sued a doctor for malpractice and is thinking of going after her chiropractor.

Confirmation: You start two new stories and write the lead for the first story. You're almost to the third graph when you realize you're writing about wastewater rate increases in the story that's supposed to be about a fatal shooting.

Mayor, on baseball

New York City's mayor is getting personally involved in baseball, and he's even going so far as to make comments that really should be archived for all time.

Brief history: The New York Yankees and the Boston Red Sox are in the midst of a series that will determine which team goes to the ultimate round known as the World Series. Yesterday, they had a short-lived brawl halfway through the game. Today, this article was published. The first two paragraphs:

NEW YORK (AP) - Boston Red Sox ace Pedro Martinez should have been arrested for throwing 72-year-old Yankees coach Don Zimmer to the ground during Game 3 of the American League Championship Series, Mayor Michael Bloomberg said Sunday.

"If that happened in New York we would have arrested the perpetrator," Bloomberg said. "Nobody should throw a 70-year-old man to the ground, period. You start doing that, pretty soon you're going to throw a 61-year-old man to the ground, and I have a big vested interest in that."

Recall prediction

It is now minutes into the day of California's historic gubernatorial recall election, and I've decided to post my predictions. You'll note that this reporter has kept her weblog recall-election-free, but what California resident could completely ignore an election in which there are 135 candidates running?

I think both propositions will fail, Gov. Gray Davis will be recalled and Arnold Schwarzenegger (better known as "Arnold" or "The Terminator") will be elected.

My candidate reasoning goes like this: Davis and (current Lt. Gov.) Cruz Bustamante will split the Democratic vote, while Schwarzenneger and Tom McClintock will split the Republican vote. I think enough people will vote for the recall simply because they're saying, "Why not?" though it won't be by such a large majority that nobody votes to keep Davis. This means the Democratic candidates will more evenly split the vote than the Republicans, simply because Schwarzenneger still has a huge following -- despite allegations of sexual misconduct. His following extends beyond party lines, so that will give him the extra votes he needs to win.

So there you have it. I'm not saying that's my view; it's just my prediction. As the votes roll in, I'll be at work, watching and waiting to finish my part of our paper's coverage of this very unique piece of California history.

Cubs

Five days ago, I wrote about how I was taking an interest in baseball. I'm getting worse: I watched part of yesterday's Chicago vs. Atlanta game and a large part of today's game. I actually talked to the TV, cheered a few times and then really cheered at the end, when the Cubs won their first postseason round in 95 years.

My sister is appalled that I'm getting into baseball. Many other people are laughing at me or are simply bewildered (as am I). I think I'll blame it on Jon.

Oh, and the next Cubs game is Tuesday, against the Florida Marlins.

Spider crimes

Stockton is a hot bed of crime, as reported in the Record:

"Officers responded at 7:34 a.m. Saturday to a report of a man undressing in the street in the 2400 block of South Madison Street. The man, who was wearing only boxer shorts, told officers he had undressed because he was trying to get a giant spider off himself."
