Who Died and Made You King? Cut Scenes
With Momo's commentary
One of the biggest relevations in "Who Died and Made You
King?" (something I suspected and addressed, but was made unclear in the final
airing) concerns the Destiny Book.
This is a cut scene which preludes Michael ditching Maria to find Jesse.
INT. CHEVELLE - NIGHT
Max drives. Liz pours over the alien book.
MAX: Why do you have that?
LIZ: I figured if the FBI is poking around, we shouldn't leave anything unattended.
MAX: Smart thinking. Hey, 'want to be the leader of a small political movement?
Perks include disgruntled follwers and a fugitive lifestyle.
LIZ: No thanks.
Liz's cell phone rings. She answers.
Liz: (cont'd): Hello? ... Where are you?
This scene picks up right after Michael dumps Maria
out of the Jetta, when Maria flags down Max and Liz. Here's the expanded scene:
EXT. DARK STREET - NIGHT
Maria waves down the Chevelle. It screeches to a halt. Maria runs over as Max
and Liz exit the car.
MARIA: OK. Michael is a super freak.
LIZ: What happened?
MARIA: He's a desert-wandering Anne Heche times a thousand -- babbling about how
Max should've stayed dead because he's make a better king.
MAX: That's insane.
Liz notices something in the book.
LIZ: Maybe not. Max, you're not in here.
She shows him the book. The page that once held engraved images of Max, Tess,
Michael, and Isabel now only holds Michael, Isabel, and Tess.
LIZ (cont'd): You all used to be on this page. But look. Now it's only Michael,
Isabel, and Tess. (then) What if the people who engineered and sent you here built
in a back-up plan? In case anything happened to you, Michael was encoded to step
up as leader.
MAX: But nothing happened to me. I'm fine.
MARIA: No. You died.
LIZ: And Michael believes he's number one.
MARIA: There was something on Michael's Chest.
MAX: Like what?
MARIA: I'm not sure. It looked like a glowing "V".
Max grabs the book, flips to a page, shows it to her.
MAX: Is this it?
MARIA: Yeah.
MAX: That's the Royal Seal of Antar. It's a mark I have inside me proving I'm
the true king. If it's on Michael now, I have been replaced.
The most important thing we learn from these
two scenes is, as I suspected, the pages in the Destiny Book are NOT fixed. The
pages CHANGE! Hence, when Max dies, he's missing from the pages. I take this as
confirmation of the idea of "free will". You choose your destiny ... and by choosing
a particular course in life, then certain "results" follow (cause and effect;
action and reaction). These "results" are what appear in the Destiny Book. With
each decision, the book changes.
What would be really interesting to see is WHAT the Destiny Book looks like now.
Would Tess's image be gone? Would Liz's picture be in her place? Would ZIL still
be there? Would the Destiny Book now show a history of Liz and her family? Would
baby Zan be included? Oh, the possibilities!
Here's a cut scene that gives us a look at Maria
who settles back into Roswell after her fleeting chance at fame and her near death
experience at the hands of Max.
LIZ and MARIA work at the cafe. Maria surveys the PATRONS.
MARIA: Here we are. Back in Roswell. Smells like hell. Looks like hell. It is
hell. (flagged WAITRESS behind counter) Gimme one Zero Gravity Float.
LIZ: The past couple days have been bumpy for me, too. Let's just try to make
the best of it.
A nearby JOCK notices Maria, shouts from his booth.
JOCK: Hey, Deluca, I thought you were opening up for O-Town.
MARIA: Fully bite me, Walsh.
LIZ: Maria!
MAX (O.S.): You only asked her to try.
MAX stand behind him.
MARIA: Thank you, Max. So how about you? Enjoy the first day back at school?
He tosses his backpack on the counter.
MAX: Considering the alternative of being dead? Yeah. It was pretty good.
LIZ: Max, can I borrow your calculus book? I left mine in my locker.
MAX: Sure.
He reaches past Maria to grab his backpack. Maria flinches.
MAX (cont'd): What?
MARIA: Sorry. Reflex. Last time you did that you were trying to crush my windpipe.
Nearby, a Patron knocks a glass to the floor. It shatters.
While there is no dialogue in this strictly action sequence,
it heightens the envy and jealously Michael has towards Max in spite of their
being best friends. Makes you really wonder about the "alien" side. This takes
place after Max heals Michael's eyes at the end.
INT. MICHAEL'S APARTMENT - NIGHT
A hand retrieves the alien book. FIND MICHAEL, looking at one of the pages. On
it, Max's images has returned. Michael shuts the book and crosses to the doorway.
IN THE LIVING ROOM
Max sleeps on the coach.
Michael stares at him. His look says it all. This power struggle is far from over.
We only get a glimpse of this in the final episode. The
script makes it quite clear. Again, the Destiny Book DOES change as events take
place and two, that Michael through his jealousy and envy of Max, could still
present a formidable problem for Max down the road -- as a potential betrayer
of "the king."
And finally, I've included this last cut scene from "Who
Died and Make You King" even though it has made the rounds. I've taken it a little
further because it's this scene that Mr. Evans adds Maria to his "Board of Suspicion".
I don't remember seeing that anywhere else.
INT. EVANS HOUSE - KITCHEN - NIGHT
Philip sits at the kitchen table. The phone is to his ear. There's RINGING on
the other end. In front of him are various cards from the "Board of Suspicion."
He jots notes on a legal pad.
EILEEN (O.C.): Hello?
PHILIP: Eileen Burrows?
EILEEN (O.C.): Yeah?
PHILIP: Hi, Eileen. My name's Philip Evans. I'm Liz Parker's lawyer back in Roswell.
EILEEN (O.C.): What'd she do?
PHILIP: Nothing. I'm working with her father to get Liz's first month of tuition
refunded.
EILEEN (O.C.): So you're suing this dump?
PHILIP: Something like that. Liz has said that the environment in the dorms was
--
EILEEN (O.C.): Wait a second. Winnaman wouldn't give her the money back even after
her boyfriend died? Nice.
Philip is stunned.
PHILIP: What?
EILEEN (O.C.): Max. Her boyfriend. You must know about that.
PHILIP: Yes, I'm sorry. It was just the connection.
EILEEN (O.C.): Well, here's my statement. She was the first decent roommate I
ever had. Her boyfriend was killed. Liz was grieving. Her friend Maria had to
come out from New Mexico to take her home. And winnaman turned a cold shoulder.
That should do it, don't you think?
PHILIP: Yes, that should be a good start.
EILEEN (O.C.): Screw 'em good, Mr ... What was it?
PHILIP: Evans. thanks for your time.
Philip disconnects. On his legal pad, he's scrawled -- "Max died?" "Maria DeLuca
visited." "No promise with roommate."
Philip notices Isabel's wedding picture sitting nearby. He picks it up.
PHILIP (cont'd): Is anyone not involved in this?
This is just one of those "busted" moments Roswell was so
famous for. This time it was Maria. You gotta love it.
