I'm comin' for you, Laurie Dupree, and I'm bringin' soup.

Humor by calico cat on the FF Ros1 thread:
"RCC#12: Hey! Who put that Blue Jellyfish in our pool?"

      return to Roswell Archives

Huge quantities of bandwidth and time have been spent by fans on the Fan Forum Roswell 1 boards posting "Funniest Screencaps."*
This one appeared in March of 2003, when they were on their 258th thread. .
The "screencaps" of the "Funniest Screencaps" threads were screen captures for which the fans had added their own funny captions of what might be spoken by the pictured actors when the images are viewed out of context.
Usually these were pictures of the actors caught in moments of angst or awkwardness.

But for the archives, I have selected this screencap by Calico Cat of the 'Jelly Fish' (the Gandarium Queen of the How the other Half Lives episode from the so-called Hybrid Chronicles quartet of Season 2) with a paraphrase of Max's moving (if nonsensical) line to Liz in Ask Not.
The 'ridiculous flying blue jellyfish' (as even the character of Isabel refers to it at the end of Season 3) was something of an embarrassment to fans, a bit of camp, and perhaps Ron Moore's way of making fun at the seriousness of the fans devotion to the show, or perhaps his expression of frustration with funding, ratings, the young cast, or any number of things that contributed to the eventual cancellation of the show.
Max's line to Liz, "So just know this...I'm coming for you, Liz," on the other hand, gave the Dreamers goosebumps at the same time that they went "huh?" Picking her up in his spaceship? In his Jeep? Is this a sexual innuendo/pun?
Together the paraphrase and the screen capture are the essence (no pun intended) of Roswell humor that pokes fun at itself.

The reference to "soup" in the caption refers to the cans of Campbell's soup in the background of the picture. The set location was supposed to be an old bomb shelter, hence the soup cans. But Roswell sets frequently used words on props to convey messages (or "shout outs") to the audience (like "High Voltage" signs in Michael and Maria scenes, or the "Shoe Service" sign with only "hoe vice" showing behind Max when he is about to be mind warped into kissing Tess for the first time in Season 1). So it is perhaps not coincidental that we see the word "Camp" behind the Jellyfish/Queen.

Each Funniest Screencaps thread has 250 posts, with many individual postings containing 4 or more images.
A
"'screencap" is short for "screen capture," or a still image from a video of the show.
"Screen captions" are words on the screen, ostensibly for the hearing impaired who are watching television, but also used by devout fans to capture every nuance of a script.
