Fox leads the sweep among adults 18-34 by a slim 10th of a rating point over NBC (4.2/14 vs. 4.1/13) and by a much more comfortable 42 percent over surprising second-placer the WB in teens (3.7/13 vs. 2.6/9). In that teen category, ABC, NBC, CBS and UPN are all within a 10th of a point of one other (2.2/8-2.3/9) to determine who finishes third through sixth in that demographic.

ROSWELL REINFORCES ITS RENEWAL HOPES: Survival chances improved last night for the WB's Roswell (2.0/5 in 18-49, 2.6/4 in homes), which earned its highest averages among adults 18-34 and persons 12-34 since the show's second episode back on Oct. 13, 1999.

The second-year teen drama also achieved season highs in six key categories -- persons, males and females in both the 12-34 and 18-34 age groups. Roswell further impressed by retaining 100 percent of its female-teen lead-in rating (6.3) from 7th Heaven (2.9/8 in 18-49, 4.3/7 in homes) and 97 percent of its 12-34 lead-in (3.1 vs. 3.2). Roswell was the night's highest-rated series among total teens, improving on its lead-in from 7th Heaven for the first time.

Roswell has performed credibly for the WB throughout this season, but relations between the network and Fox Television have been strained since that studio's Buffy the Vampire Slayer cut its ties with the WB to jump to the rival UPN network. Industry speculation suggests the network will respond by cutting loose Fox Television's Roswell, certainly a more expendable series than Buffy.
